STORY:
On the eve of the Olympic Games in China, Candlelight vigils and demonstrations across the world to called for greater freedom in Tibet.
In Taiwan, crowds gathered in Taipei's Liberty Square-amongst them, Buddhist monks in maroon robes.
They chanted prayers in front of candles arranged to spell the word "Freedom."
Many participants signed a long petition calling for a Free Tibet.
[Liu Shu-Ying, Tibet Activist]:
"What I find strange is...they promised to improve human rights, but what we see is not only an unfulfilled promise--they've also killed and suppressed Tibetan people, they suppress their own people, that's what we see."
In the Indian town of Dharamsala, home to the Dalai Lama, a group of three Tibetan brothers and a Belgian got together for an evening of music and songs.
The concert attracted crowds of locals and visitors, who held candles and sang along with the performers.
[Jigme, Singer]:
"Up to now we have been playing music for free Tibet and we always think that music is one of our best weapons as a peaceful way."
More vigils in Tel Aviv, Israel. Pro-Tibet supporters watched movies about the plight of Tibetan refugees and lit candles in the center of the city.
[Noga Porat, Amnesty International, Israel]:
"We came here tonight to light a candle, this is our Olympic torch, this is the Olympic torch for human rights."
And i n Washington DC, protesters gathered outside the Chinese Embassy.
They waved flags and help up posters supporting independence for Tibet.
Pro-Tibet demonstrations like these have marked the run up to the Olympic Games in China.
Beijing hopes the world media will focus on the Olympic extravaganza-the biggest international event the country has staged.
