FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS UPDATED 8-27-11, PLEASE READ!
-Did it hurt? Yes. On a scale from 1-10, probably an 8 at the most. Why didn't I flinch during the split? Well, I sort of didn't want to make the person who was doing the split accidentally cut off my nose or my WHOLE tongue, so I stayed really still ;)
-Did they numb you? No. Most shops/modification artists either don't have legal access to numbing agents or they choose not to use them as a part of their philosophy and discipline.
-Why did you do it? After a few years of contemplation, weighing the pros and cons, I decided it's what I wanted to do. As I've taken an apprentice post under my fiancee, I wanted to become intimately familiar with the split procedure and healing process so when the time comes I would be able to share the information first hand to people who I perform the procedure on. In my eyes, it wouldn't be fair for me to do this to someone and tell them how to heal it without really even knowing myself. It was also something I wanted to do with my fiancee as something special we could share together - it was a very special thing for me and a great bonding experience. I'm almost 26 years old, I'm not some spontaneous teenager who did this out of the blue one day, so please spare me the whole "OMG DIDNT U THINK ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCES?" stuff. Still, with all that said I won't lie, though - I like it when someone walks around showing off their snakebites and stretched ears or something at a party and ends up changing their attitude when they find out I have my tongue split. Yeah, I'll be honest - I never show off my tongue, but if it comes up in a situation like that I'll gladly rock it ;)
-What about getting a job? A tattoo or simple lip piercing is a MUCH bigger problem if you want to get a job. A tongue split is almost literally invisible unless you stick your tongue out and purposefully try to show off the split. My fiancee and I both have our tongues split - and we both have gotten jobs since then, and still have those same jobs today. We have good jobs, a place of our own, cars, pets we love, supportive family and friends, and an upcoming wedding. Don't fool yourself or make assumptions; some people on Youtube think this is some life-altering decision that makes us incapable of being part of society or being successful, and that couldn't be further from the truth. Like I said before, a split is MUCH 'better' than piercings or tattoos when it comes to jobs or any social environment. It's basically impossible to notice a split, it's as good as invisible.
-Where did you get it done? For various reasons, I'm not at liberty to say. It was a place in northern California, though.
-What's the healing process like? I'd go through it 100 times before I ever got another tongue piercing. It's relatively simple - keep a gauze pad in the middle overnight for the first night or two, pull apart the sides on occasion to keep them from healing back too much, brush and rinse after eating or drinking, just basic stuff really. The gauze might get stuck in there after the first night, but if you take your time and use hot water with seasalt to loosen it up, it'll come off within a few minutes.
-You'd go through getting your TONGUE cut in half 100 times before you'd ever get another tongue piercing?! Yes. It might be hard to believe, but a split is safer overall and much easier to heal and take care of. To prove this, I've had my tongue split twice and never got my tongue pierced again. Splits generally heal extremely fast and I was eating on the first night! A tongue piercing can take up to a year for initial healing to finish and requires constant care. Even after having my tongue piercing for a year, it never healed fully. It constantly hurt and was just a pain. A split is way easier to deal with and is actually less dangerous when it comes down to it. That's because a tongue piercing requires you to have a piece of bacteria-harvesting jewelry stuck into a wound in your tongue creating pressure on the wound, as to where a split is just a clean cut.
-Why would you get the split done more than once? Once it's split, your tongue likes to try to grow together from the back of the split where the two sides meet. Having at least a little bit of regrowth is normal for splits. One of the few ways to 'fix' that is to get it done again, up to a few times or more. Each time you split it along the same area, more and more scar tissue forms which won't grow back easily, leaving a better split each time.
-Can you get it reversed? Yes. That would involve cutting off parts of your tongue, though. Not splitting, but cutting off tongue tissue from both sides and stitching the two sides together. It would be incredibly painful and leave a huge lump of scar inside your tongue.
