  • @Hassar600 The City of Rayville, which was carrying a cargo of lead, wool and copper from South Australia to New York via Melbourne, was lost off Cape Otway after striking a German mine on November 8, 1940. USS Ruben James - Torpedoed 31 Oct 41 by U-552 while escorting convoy HX-156 across the North Atlantic, Reuben James was arguably the 1st American combatant sunk by deliberate enemy action (if one accepts the Japanese apologies for the Panay).

  • never heard before-nice

  • @Hassar600 ..The U.S. was neutrel during that time, and Adolph Hitler gave orders to the U-Boat commanders not to fire on America shiips, although the U.S Navy protected british cargo ships in the North Atlantic...Upon the sinking of the Reuben James. Hitler was very upset the the U-Boat commander who was responsible and repremanded him. Of course, it became a moot point hardly more than a month later, when he (Hitler) declared War on the U.S. following the Jap attack on Pearl Harbor.

  • This will always be a trick question: What was first American Ship sunk in World War II? If I remember right, the James was sunk October 31st (Halloween) 1941. A month and seven days before America's official entry into the war. However, I understand the U.S. Navy had been in an declared war against the U-Boats already for nearly a year. However, the sinking was the first direct attack an American Warship.

  • The US Navy named a barracks in RTC after the man and ships he was named after... it houses the 900 divisions... I was in-fact apart of one of those divisions... 907

which is why Johnny Horton is amazing!
