Not one of my hardest lead trumpet charts, but definitely a pure example of clean and polished lead playing: Notice the tone, the intonation, the spot on almost 100% accuracy, the dominance ( this was live and not mixed meaning I was cutting through the entire band in a huge auditorium ), the phrasing, the endurance, etc.... This chart, if played like I played it, separates the men from the boys because although it is not the craziest lead part out there, it defines a lead trumpet players ability and if you cannot play this stellar, you still are not a lead trumpet player! You can probably easily pick up a copy of the lead trumpet part for this tune and practice, listen to this video, practice again, then play along....IT WILL IMPROVE YOUR LEAD PLAYING! Now, go listen to any number of other trumpet players who can play high, but not always sound so good and you will come to understand that screeching out high notes is NOT what makes an extraordinary lead trumpet player. I mean.....it is actually nice to enjoy listening to a great lead trumpet player as music rather than listening to a cat's tail being stepped on....wouldn't you agree?
Did I just see Carlos Hayes in the sax section?!?! I love that guy!
