South Park has ridiculed it, protesters have attacked it and Germany has tried to outlaw it.
Yet the Church of Scientology still operates in 160 countries, with an extremely complex economic model that makes it hard for opponents to go after its finances.
This video gives a glimpse into the finances of the secretive church.
Ever since the 1980s, when it faced a potentially lethal class-action lawsuit and intense scrutiny from the U.S. government, the group has reportedly spread its revenues—and its liability—among a vast array of independent trusts, corporations and nonprofits.
All are reportedly tightly controlled by David Miscavige, a second-generation Scientologist, who has run the church since the 1986 death of its founder, science-fiction author L. Ron Hubbard.
Tax filings from the early 1990s show that the church was earning about $300 million a year back then, but the paper trail disappears after that.
The church won tax-exempt status in 1993 and is not required to file annual returns with the I.R.S., so its extremely difficult to tell just how much Scientology takes in during a given year.
However, Portfolio.com asked a number of sources - ex-Scientologists familiar with the churchs finances to help arrive at an estimate of its annual revenue.
According to a former Scientologist, a single 2007 event in the U.K. helped pay for dozens of new buildings and fueled a two-week pledge drive that netted nearly $50 million.

The biggest recent single U.S. gift was reportedly a $7.5 million donation from Nancy Cartwright, who does the voice of Bart Simpson.

Other major donors include Tom Cruise, whos given an estimated $25 million over the years, Kirstie Alley, and Jenna Elfman.

The estimated revenue from fundraising and donations is $100 million.
Scientology boasts hundreds of organizations, centers, and missions around the world, which charge annual membership fees to their members.

In addition, followers also pay to be cleared of their problems via counseling sessions known as auditing, (which average $500 an hour).

The estimated revenue from compulsory donations and auditing is $400 million
Therefore, the Bottom Line is that the TOTAL ESTIMATED ANNUAL REVENUE IS $500 MILLION

  • Keep, convincing yourself that it's a religion. It's a cult. If jim jones took peoples money and built jonestown, take a look at the RPF camps that these scientologists have, kind of similar. If you have seen the video that I sent you on a link, and still think it's a religion, then I feel sorry for you. Anyway, I am done with this conversation. Also it's my human right, and freewill to protest and fight against whom ever I choose. Just like you choose to be ignorant.

  • You should join scientology, you'd make a perfect candidate to rake in people that think like you. I have seen both sides, but the same keeps coming up. cult cult cult cult cult cult... oh yeah, did I say CULT.

  • @sloshop Also don't be fooled by the word "donation". Televangelists on tv promise that if you send in a $50 donation they will send you a product. You're buying a product, not "donating" you money. You don't "donate" when you buy groceries or file income taxes either. These organisations call it "donating" because it makes it seem more legitimate, but what you're really doing is buying a product.

  • @sloshop Yeah, because there are 1 billion Catholics in the world that freely decide if they want to donate and how much they want to give. They don't have to pay to go to confession though, and they don't have to pay to learn about what Catholicism is. A priest or nun would freely tell you and the information is completely available online as well. There are even organisations that give away bibles for free! Scientology on the other hand, makes you pay for everything.

  • ... It's extremely ironic that there is an ad for dianetics[.]org right next to this video.

  • @insaider696 It has helped a couple people initially. Long-term, it hurts a lot of people. There is much, much, much evidence that it's leaders are bad people doing bad things. Research it a little. Just a little. Judge for yourself.

  • If it's a Religion, a cult, a company etc. I DON'T FUCKING CARE. It HELPS PEOPLE.

  • Im starting going to a Scientology Church in Mexico City, I had to pay 50 dollars for a communication skill course, which is cheaper than a private firm, and cheaper than a Phsycology session, and I didnt have to sign anything, I asked the people there and the money comes from donations and I really like it... I think is more ethic than a church charges for courses and sessions than lying to get money from other churches, nowadays Vatican City earns more money than any other church...

  • Tom bought his medal...

  • Yeah but we have seen people "deprived of property or injured by any means by any Scientologist without any discipline of the Scientologist. May be tricked, sued or lied to or destroyed." in the name of scientology. Dont play the high card you guys are just as bad.

  • Skiie calls it a religion, but it was started by a crazy medicated and very crappy SCIENCE FICTION writer in the 20th Century who said if you want to make money start a religion. If just the name SCIENCE - tology doesn't make you think then you might as well be a Scilon sheep. He was clearly studying SCIENCE FICTION, probably his own crap.
