Pavement US = roadway UK. ..Sidewalk US = pavement UK
Sidewalks (US) often have people walking on them and the surface is less grippy than asphalt and there are lamp posts and lots of other posts - and dog dirt - so I would not go for the sidewalk ( US) or pavement (UK)
I saved a crash last year by pulling on the handbrake to turn the car sideways - but that was in the UK - my US parking brake is foot operated and the car is auto.
Bought blizzak tyres - ice tires are the only answer
