@MishaGelsey You are so right, my friend! Misha-Gelsey all the way! Incomparable!

@2314543 No need to be rude! It's nice that you're so loyal to Harvey, but I think @MishaGelsey and @jondavwal are spot-on! I saw both the Kirkland-Baryshnikov paring (in Don Q, Giselle, and others), as well as the Harvey-Baryshnikov pairing. Harvey is a powerful soloist but she is nowhere even close to Kirkland! The chemistry between Kirkland and Baryshnikov blew the roof off of the theater every time, far and above. The audience reaction to Kirkland and Baryshnikov was on another planet!

@MishaGelsey oh bugger off Harvey has the most beautiful natural line going for her and she is beautiful playing kirti in this show of don Q with barishnikov i couldn't see gelsey pulling this off as good as she did. I can watch many play this role as kitri but Cynthia Harvey is the most beautiful and natural dancer i've ever seen. And when she dances with barishikov it amazing it doesn't look like a show on the stage it looks very real

@MishaGelsey I wholeheartedly agree with you! Gelsey was Misha's best-matched partner, and they blew everyone else out of the water. Harvey is a great soloist, but she's completely out of her element in this DVD, and it's a total disappointment that Gelsey was too sick at the time. I have yet to see a partnership as magnetic as Baryshnikov and Kirkland's. You had to see them to believe the chemistry. They communicated onstage like no others. Total, total heat and passion. Technically perfect.

@jondavwal I mean, for crying out loud - Harvey can dance, but watch two seconds of Baryshnikov with Kirkland and it's a whole other playing field. Like, Harvey's too out of her element to even make eye contact with Baryshnikov. Gelsey and Misha would overtly flirt and challenge each other on stage with direct eye contact and complete musical unity. It was like an intimate conversation between Baryshnikov and Kirkland, even in conflict! No offence, but everyone else just pales in comparison!

@jondavwal It is staggering how right you have that. He catches himself and reigns it in. I just read another interview where he is really letting himself say how she was the best then and still unmatched today, and then pulls back. I believe that, in addition to her public apology to him, he says more today because he sees how her illnesses marred her sanity. He was rightfully shunning her for years after the book, but 20-plus years on he is able to look back at what they created together.

@MishaGelsey It's totally work it to make the trip. Misha is somewhat generous about her. At one point he admitted she was the greatest of her generation. Now, he starts to say how amazing she was and then catches himself and lumps her in with four or five other ballerinas. I don't blame him completely. She was merciless in Dancing on My Grave. And truthfully, I believe most of what she says. I'm not a dancer but I learned a lot about commitment to art from her first book. I'm a musician.

@jondavwal It has been a lifelong plan to get to NYC to see those tapes. I want to see La Sylphide and the full Giselle. In my ballet years I knew an older dancer who was being coached by Gelsey. She let me watch a two-hour tape that Gelsey had shared with her for coaching purposes. It was clips of Gelsey from various roles from '72 - '75. I was glued to the girl for months, watching this tape for hours each day. Gelsey's the biggest artistic influence in my life. Misha was his best with her!

@MishaGelsey Have you seen the entire performance at Lincoln Center? It's silent but it's spellbinding nonetheless. This video is like you went to see the young Meryl Streep and you find out Meg Ryan is filling in. FYI, in her book her preparation for Kitri was one of the most interesting parts. She thought Misha cast her to make a fool of her and she was terrified. Instead she became Maya Plisetskaya. There are also videos of her rehearsing the part. I've never seen anybody work so hard.
if i was her, i would be thinking "holly shit, I'm dancing with barishnikov" whole dance. lol. amazing performance.

@jondavwal I know that Cynthia Harvey had a good career, but I can't watch this particular video/DVD because - as you so rightly pointed out - it was Gelsey's role all the way. That tiny clip on the GKACB intro page encapsulates more than this entire video with Harvey. Not to be mean to Harvey, who has her talents, but she just doesn't come close to Gelsey, and Gelsey-Misha were so much more chemical together!
