Driving an HP LED display with an Atmel AVR. The display is an 8 character 5x7 dot matrix LED, part# QDSP-2543. The driving microcontroller is an ATmega32L.
I got a couple of these displays out of a display grab bag from jameco.com many years back, just recently decided to wire one up and play with it. The control program is written in BASIC, simply to test the display and start creating routines to write to it easily.
Have to say, for an old LED display is it rather nice, hard wired internal logic is fast, and has user custom character flash.......the only drawback is the current consumption.

A 4x20 LCD display will only draw about 150mA, this little beast consumes up to 400mA will all characters lit at full brightness(can't see it in the video, but my 7805 is on a medium sized heatsink).
