China Forum welcomes Dr. David Lampton, Director of China Studies at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies and USCPF board member, and Dr. Cheng Li, Director of Research at the Brookings Institution's John L. Thornton China Center, to discuss the upcoming Chinese leadership transition beginning in 2012. The 18th Party Congress occurring in October 2012 will see an unprecedentedly large shift in power from the 4th generation of Chinese leaders, who are retiring or have reached the Party age limit, to the younger 5th generation. Dr. Lampton and Dr. Li discuss the transition process, the factionalism emerging within the competition for coveted senior-level positions, and Chinese public opinion surrounding the elite political changes.
