Admittedly, many of the best cocktail recipes are discovered by accident. A mellow Thursday afternoon in 1999, with the light sounds of Island music wafting on the breeze, was the setting for one such twist of fate when big-wave surfer Shawn Briley had a craving for a mango martini and challenged veteran bartender Jesse Greenleaf to make him one...a big challenge with no mango in sight behind the bar.
Successfully rising to the occasion, Greenleaf later noticed the concoction was one ingredient shy of the classic Long Island Iced Tea. On a whim, he quartered the liqueurs and added gin, one of the main liquors in a Long Island Iced Tea. And surprise, surprise—it absolutely made the drink! Naturally, he named it the Hawaiian Island Iced Tea. The drink won Best New Drink at the first annual Iron Bartender Contest, and has become a favorite at Duke's Waikiki.
