This is a good speech but one which his detractors vehemently disagreed with. They would say we are the ones waging a war of aggressive expansionism, not the North Vietnamese; that we say we are for self-determination, yet we support colonial powers, such as France and Britain; that this is a global struggle, yet Ho Chi Minh never espoused invading California; that we are for eradication of poverty, yet our cities are segregated and on fire.

And so, the debate continues.

@RichardElden Describe "another 24 hours would have made a huge difference" that for me. Technically you forgetting it's the middle east, a hotbed of religious where tribal groups from different middle east countries kill each other a lot, It's not like Germany and Japan during the post-World War 2 era where democracy was installed and it works perfectly.

I was for it but when i think about about the 1994 Cheney interview, i had to rethink about it.

@DiverseLA The insurgency in Iraq will last as long as Iran was next to Iraq. Just recently, a Baghdad bombing killed 15 people by insurgents.

No, the Iraqis failed themselves to have their own stable government despite coalition assistance. Don't worry, because the new Iraqi government will collapse soon when U.S. forces leave by the end of this month and it will be worse than Saddam Hussein's regime. A radical sharia law.

@RichardElden Technically if you do, then it would create a vacuum power. Most of the middle eastern coalition allies didn't really press into Baghdad in 1991 because it fear it would created a vacuum power(much like what is happening now removing Saddam Hussein from power in 2003) .

Even Dick Cheney in 1994 said it for himself it would be a mistake to overthrow the Iraqi government and lives was not worthy for going there(look it up on YouTube "1994 quagmire Cheney").

I was 7 years old in 67.We had a Color TV and everything was in color.Why do you and other people try to make this look like its from 1950 when we had color.We were almost putting men on the moon by then,we had technology!Jeese!

@thefakeyeti so yeah he messed up. but almost everyone would have done the same thing when vietnam didnt want to call the peace, and his military advisor told him he would lose the war if he didnt send more troops, what qould u do? :/

All this talk about freedom, and he FORCED scared 18 yearolds to go into combat situations..

How about THEIR freedom?

@RichardElden Yes, Tet Offensive did break the will of the American people to fight on. For the Communists, it was a military defeat. But psychologically it told the American people that the opposition could still mount a large attack.

Just curious; are you upset that the US won in Iraq though? The insurgency has largely been crushed, the new Iraqi government is slowly succeeding, Saddam's regime is gone, etc.

I opposed the Iraq War from the start, but I am glad Al Qaeda did not succeed.
