i think it has something to do with the fact that people who aren't into radiohead think creep is their only song. but at the same time, if radiohead suddenly became liked by the normal casual music fans, then all the radiohead fans would be pissed off.

i love hunting bears, i hate myxamotosis and most of pablo honey, i have nothing against the rest of it.

Also, re: High and Dry, sounds like coldplay only five years earlier, if you think of it like that its pretty interesting.

Without creep none of the later stuff would ever have eventuated, or if it did it is unlikely we would ever have heard it.

For that reason i like creep. I find that the track itself is made bareable by jonny's steel crunching that preludes the chorus, but largely the song is rather uninteresting compared to their later stuff, TSH included.

I know that John Leckie would not have been anywhere near the production, and consequently the Bends would never have been completed. Also the studio the album was produced in was built off the songs royalties.

Creep might be a great song, but most Radiohead fans don't like it for a number of reasons (I'm guessing). First, its not particularly representative of their work from any period. When the only song that someone can think of is 'Creep' and not one of their 100's of their other amazing songs, it gets very frustrating. Its also infamous because of the all the stress that it bred for Radiohead after Pablo Honey, and I think that a lot of fans try to be sympathetic.
