RIVERSIDE, Ohio (WDTN) - A driver had to be freed from his car following a crash early Wednesday morning with another car at the intersection of Woodman Drive and Airway Road.
The man was rushed to Miami Valley Hospital. His condition is not known, but he was conscious at the scene. His passenger was also taken to the hospital.
Rescue workers spent about 20 minutes trying to get the driver out of the car. First they took a door off and later they cut into the top of the car and peeled back the roof.
Firefighters say they had to think about more than just getting the man out.
"With the cold weather we have to be extra vigilant to make sure the patient stays covered up and warm," Riverside Fire Department Lt. Chris Tesarz says. "We try to do that as best we can with the resources we have."
The accident happened around 1 a.m. when witnesses say the driver who had to be cut from the car turned in front of another car headed down Woodman Drive. The driver of that car wasn't injured.
Authorities say drivers need to be careful out on the roads.
"Please slow down," Riverside police officer Michael Brewer says. "It's a major major thing this time of year with the roads being damp, especially at night."
