Render passes were first introduced in Maya 2009. The terms "Render Layers" and "Render Passes" are sometimes used interchangeably. However, this is inaccurate.
In this tutorial we will explore how to extract the render passes out of Maya and going through all the available options.
Excellent!

I can't seem to find the right troubleshoot on this area but... when I render with passes: all I get is pure black. In a layer I have Phys Sun and Sky and a Geo that is in Mia Material X. The render setting is Mental Ray. Passes are exactly what you have in this video.

@shikamaru5608 You will have to convert the paint effects to polygons and then it works with mental ray, with wind simulation and all working. Been there myself!

Hey, excellent tutorial. But I have one question. Is it possible to do one render pass with mental ray and another with Maya Software? I ask because I want to use the "Physical sun and sky" feature which only works in mental ray. I also want to use the paint effects grass feature which only renders in Maya Software. I appreciate your help.
