A Champion's Last Days

I was asked to video tape a famous Arabian horse on what could be her last days. She was blind and not able to get up on her feet without several men helping her. She was the love of her owner's life who wanted something filmed that was sweet and not too sad. She always felt good after a nice bath and hopefully she might get a little spunk back, which she did. Since I battle blindness myself, I felt connected to her. This tape, wiped me out.

When it was my pony's last day I gave her a bath and braided her mane and tail. I wanted her looking nice for the burial. I gave her lots of treats and bran mash, then I let her loose in the pasture with the rest of the horses, she hadnt got to do that for a long time because she was really sick. She couldnt see very well. Despite her pain, she kicked up her heels and galloped around. When the vet came, I kissed her and held her head as she died. Goodbye Shiloh, I love you and miss you <3

To grow old by living a life consisting of many happy days in succession, that's the ultimate.  Do not think that being old is so bad. To die before experiencing all that life has to offer is what is bad.

What a lovely, lasting tribute to a beautiful mare. In her day she must have been stunning. Brought back so many memories for me, we used to breed Arabians. My last horse was a big gentle giant, he belied his warmblood nature. When I had to have him put down, he took a piece of my heart with him. Rest well, all our lost beauties, we will love you always xx
