A transcription and enhanced version of this with clear piano view and also naotation is available at

This is a version of this great Ellington song. It begins with a rubato intro, then sequenced bass and drums that I recorded some time ago were used again as backing to the improvised piano. There is another version of this at http://home.wanadoo.nl/dougmckenzie/
with the same drum and bass backing in midi format

  • i play the piano- well i try and i like it but what really intreagues me is do these musicians learnt the piece from memory lots of times over before they can play without the music or do they just pick it uplike geniuses- surely they have to work hard on a piece doing it over and over again like anyine else- can someone answer? I know its a stupid question but it puzzles me

  • This was improvised just using a leadsheet (a chart with melody and chords). The analysis and comments came later.

Improvising is a skill that people with a jazz background work hard on. It depends on an understanding of the harmony as well as a good grasp of the language of jazz - its special idioms. Memorising the music itself is not the important thing to do - though recognising familiar harmonic/melodic patterns in the piece helps to guide the improvisor as he/she plays.

  • nice

  • @jazz2511 Hey i have been taking jazz lessons for about two years now, and one thing that i can't seem to understand is the improve on a piece. I've been playing for about 8 years now, but jazz is definetly the hardest to pick up. I know the basics for improving on a jazz scale, but when i listen to my teacher, or this it makes me feel like my improve is about as good as chopsticks. Theres no real question in this comment, its more of a puzzled statement. But thanks for the great improve

  • i hope to have as unique of a sound as you one day, sir.

  • your really good I can only read music I can't play like that.....I wish I could play by ear

  • Which Version is this??

  • Beautiful. Thanks so much for sharing this Doug.

  • Love your mellow sound. All on the same page musically. Love it when it all comes together like this.
