The noise currently coming from my Mazdaspeed 6. Is it a problem with the timing chain tensioner?

  • @HizerKite: In my case, the noise was indeed the serpentine belt tensioner. The noise would get worse when the AC compressor would kick on. Put your heater on defrost and stick your head under the hood to see if the noise changes when the AC compressor turns on. I hope this is all your problem is!

  • Hey thanks for the info. Can I ask how much they charged to replace it?

  • @heynow59 The tensioner was replaced under warrantee, so I'm not sure what the price was.

  • @heynow59: the bad tensioner was on the serpentine belt, not the timing chain. The noise would occur at idle when the AC would cycle on and off.

  • The dealer determined this noise was a bad belt tensioner. They replaced it under warrantee along with my bad turbo.

  • had exactly the same noise, changed the belt tensioner, 50 bucks at carquest and stopped right away

  • Go to NAPA and get a good mechanics' stethoscope.

  • I spun a rod bearing in my speed6, it has been in the shop for 10 months because i have a shitty mechanic and dont have a couple of grand to fix it!!

  • Hi, sorry to bother you as I realise this is an old post.but I have a Mazda 6 2.3L which has a very similar sound to this. Reading the comments on your page it looks like your noise was caused by the serpentine belt tensioner, is that correct? (sorry for sounding thick but am hoping it's not me timing chain on it's way out as really love the car)

  • @jordanbilyeu yea that happens.. But also the tensioner can fail and the chain stretches and it rubs causing noise.. But my Wrx had this problem the Belt tensioner on the serpentine belt was bad and it sounded like rod nock lol..

  • i had the same noise in my 6. i took it to the dealer and they told me it was premature wear of the bearing in the idle belt pully. they replaced it under warrenty and now at 78,000 the noise is back.

  • Hey thats so much for the info. Can I ask how much they charged to replace it?
