@JackKangaroo1 does the book explain why this particular painting seems to mess with him, or does the book mention it at all?

Before this film was made I had already read the book, originally titled in German "Die Nacht der Generale," by the great German novelist Hans Hellmut Kirst, who himself had been an officer in the German Army during WWII. It provides a chilling look at Lieutenant General Tanz, played so well by Peter O'Toole in the film. Another favorite of mine was his novel "The Officer Factory." Both impressed me very much when I first read them at the age of 17 and again when I re-read them years later.

@kocsogarc No need to allow yourself to become personally insuted by my very well considered and thoughtful conmment. I don't even know what an "American B thriller: is. I challenge you to grow by sticking to the content of my comment if you wish to respond to me.

Probably you are used to the 'interesting' American B thrillers ;)

I can't believe the lauditory comments this uninspired drek is receiving here. Sanity must prevail. The production is lavish. The cast is stellar. O'Toole is excellent at catatonia. There is no plot of any value, no mystery, no intrigue, no puzzle to solve. You will only keep watching to see whether your initial reaction to this (that it's crap) is actually correct. It is!!!!
