There is no point training a closer shot, when that longer shot is more akin to a game jumpshot. Also, this way, one definitely does NOT step over the line on free throws, and they gain a better view at the ring and their shot does not have to be as high because it is not as close..it can be a flatter shot....it all allows for better shooting. Also...if one does miss from this range they can easily get back on defense because they are closer to the other end than at the foul line...This is wise!
