Francesco Schettino, captain of the sunken Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia, is the most hated man in Italy. Captain Schettino's recklessness may have doomed the Costa Concordia, which hit a reef and capsized near the island of Giglio.

Just as damning is Francesco Schettino's behavior after the Costa Concordia ran aground. First, he tried to downplay the seriousness of Costa Concordia's problems to the authorities. Then he boarded a lifeboat and abandoned ship, leaving behind hundreds of passengers. The Italian coast guard ordered Schettino to return to the ship and participate in the rescue operation. Schettino responded that it was too dark and that another lifeboat was blocking him. He then headed for land and hailed a taxi. Schettino is now under house arrest.

Some of the men on board the Costa Concordia also behaved in an unchivalrous manner, shoving women and children aside to get a spot on one of the lifeboats.

Whatever happened to "women and children first?"

@LadyBakura92 Im not trying to bash italians. I have Italian friends. People just joke and make stereotypes about many nationalities. Italians among them. So this behavior just fell into the stereotype which i have heard in the past. I mentioned that I would not agree with such statement if it was serious.

@beqa16v An italian guy died to leave his place on the lifeboat to a child (I wonder if YOU would have done this), another one helped everyone to get on the lifeboat even with his broken leg and stood for 38 hours on that ship, all the citizens of Giglio helped the passengers with everything they could (food, warm clothes and shelters)...now make that happy expression (:D) again, laugh and say they are true italians!..I can't respect people who judge others by nationality, whoever they are!
