This junction is a bit of a left hook blackspot. So I take the lane, but the white van man can't wait and dangerously dives across from the right hand lane.

Highway Code
167
DO NOT overtake where you might come into conflict with other road users. For example
• approaching or at a road junction on either side of the road
• when you would force another road user to swerve or slow down
• stay behind if you are following a cyclist approaching a roundabout or junction, and you intend to turn left

182
Use your mirrors and give a left-turn signal well before you turn left. Do not overtake just before you turn left and watch out for traffic coming up on your left before you make the turn, especially if driving a large vehicle. Cyclists, motorcyclists and other road users in particular may be hidden from your view.

183
When turning
• keep as close to the left as is safe and practicable
• give way to any vehicles using a bus lane, cycle lane or tramway from either direction

133
If you need to change lane, first use your mirrors and if necessary take a quick sideways glance to make sure you will not force another road user to change course or speed. When it is safe to do so, signal to indicate your intentions to other road users and when clear, move over.

  • @monk3yboy69 The road goes straight on not left. You don't know the junction very well if you think differently. I like most of the traffic was going straight on and was in the correct lane for this. The van was in the wrong lane for turning left and choice to turn dangerously.

Does this really mean .. "Ugh, im scraping the egg off my face - I better make a reply so I dont look too silly =D "

  • @NickPwnsUTube No shit.

Why do people seem to think commuting is a form of competition? You can ride safely and courteously, and motorists will respect you for it. Thinking that all motorist will kill you given any provocation is no way to cycle, and trying to give them space at every opportunity will endanger you more.

  • @cabaretampere I htink he means, 'if it hits you, you're going to lose'.

  • @rchrdbgi8 If you argue with a motorist and you are right you will win surely?

  • I'v got one of those eletric bikes and i use it to go to work and back. But i still give cars the right of way because they are bigger and faster and if you argue with a car you will lose.

  • @westcountrytim Going on from this, as it states in the Highway code, you should never overtake a cyclist (nor any other vehicle if you're sane) when turning left

  • @JohnUnit In London cycling is much faster than cars or even the tube. When they overtake me on my bike I catch them back up at the next traffic lights/queue.

  • @TheRealEmskiHelp I should add I'm not anti-bike in general, I bike maybe once a month, I just don't see them as a solution to traffic congestion unless you eliminate cars all together, which is not practical.

  • @TheRealEmskiHelp And I've hit 105 in my car. But I don't drive it at that speed for any length of time and you don't ride at 42mph for any distance either. Considering speed limits around here are usually 37mph (60km/h), and the speed of traffic 40+, your alltime fastest speed on a flat road is barely enough to keep pace with traffic. Throw in the inevitable hill or a backpack or a trip of more than a mile or so, and you're slowing traffic down. On your best day ever.

  • @zederish Maybe but his is just a few seconds of the persons (twats) day, so who can say what else they do.

  • @planetrockford I think you are overreacting
