A classic film, and one that is some what forgotten today.
I also think it was the first, and probably the only, major Hollywood film that dealt with the Congo uprising.
The book was called "Last Train to Katanga."

Glad to hear you like Rod Taylor!
I agree with you, Young Cassidy and Dark of the Sun were two of his best, along with The Time Machine.
It's too bad his career took a nose dive in the early 1970's! Nobody wanted masculine heroes anymore, only soft powder-puff efeminate men who were concerned with how they looked!
And look where that has taken us!!

Excellent film! German tv took out the part where the german kills the little girl and boy!
Also, one of Jim Brown's first movie roles!

Good news! You can also get it through Amazon or Turner Classic Movies. I've waited along time for this one. Now they need to release another Rod Taylor classic "Darker than Amber."

this has been released as part of the Warner Archive - go to the Warner Brothers website and they'll sell you a copy, gladly. It's a record on demand service. You can't watch the DVDs on your computer, just a dvd player, but it is available for purchase

@SupportingActor I've found good quality downloads of it. When I 1st started looking for it about 2 years ago, it was really hard to find. Than all of the sudden it started popping up all over. Stagevu has a free, good quality download, for anybody interested.

@GordonMorrice Correction: German TV has shown the uncut (or at least a less censored) version in recent years.

The upcoming Warner DVD is the censored version that has been shown on TCM. The uncut version with gore and Mimieux cleavage hasn't been seen since 1968 prints.
I've been waiting for years to see this movie get a proper DVD release. It was distributed by MGM back in 1968 but now apparently Warner owns the righst and they are notorious for sitting on their film library and doing nothing. I was hoping Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds would get somebody at Warner to wake up and get Dark Of The Sun out on DVD but apparently not.

Turner Entertainment actually owns the rights. On the VHS release, the Turner logo appears before the MGM logo. Rumour has it DOTS will finally be released in 2011.

It hasn't been officially released yet. However, there have been copies produced from VHS or 16 mm film being sold at various sites for a few years. Sometimes those copies are OK, most of the time the quality is horrible.

So far it hasn't been officially released on DVD yet. It was released on VHS about 5 years ago, but is now out of print. You can find VHS copies for sale on EBAY on a regular basis.
