On the morning of December 26th 2009 around 02:00 E.S.T. a passerby noticed smoke in the downtown Canton, Ga. business district. The Canton Fire Department arrived to find the old Fincher's Canton Rexall Drug store fully involved with fire. The building was a total loss. The soda fountain was a hangout for the kids of the 60s, 70s and 80s, as well as many of the "older locals.

  • @srryexcuse247 I think what you obviously meant to ask is: With that much involvement, such old construction, and no sprinkler systems....how did they (A) not get killed, and (B) keep from losing the whole damn block??? Wake up 247, you cant see the forrest for the trees.

  • it happened in the middle of the night and by the time anyone had discoverd the fire it was heavily involved on the interior and they tried to go inside but conditions deteriorated and then they had to fight it from outside and it went well on into the day, i am an explorer and i arrived on scene the next day to assist with clean up and i was there until noonish then we caught another fire in north canton, cherokee county and the city of canton are amazing fire departments.

  • how did this happen, the fire station is a block away...

  • Man, I live close by and just found out a few minutes ago, like you I grew up with the drug store when they had a snack bar, and even went to the shoe repair place. Part of my memories are gone for good.

  • I just went by there an hour ago. Back in 2004, I used to intern as a video for a woman named Sue Ann Taylor who owned a TV production company there called Blue Heron Films. That was a cool building. The firefighters told me it was built around 1938. What a loss. I'll be watching closely to what the investigation uncovers.
