Salem Witch Trials- Hysteria

In the Puritan village of Salem, Massachusetts, political and personal tensions simmer under the surface of strict piety and enforced morality. But when a group of teenaged girls fall victim to a mysterious "affliction" which is blamed on witchcraft, the darker side of Salem's godly residents will be revealed in a witchhunt which will claim nineteen lives.

@WiccanWitch333 the point is that witches have never existed. the hysteria was caused by mentions of witchcraft in the bible, along with a mixture of old english myths with carribean slave myths. these people feared "satan's" influence over people, that is they targeted social pariahs, the deformed, and the mentally disabled for witchcraft accusations.

there is no such thing as witchcraft.

@FatalBellman Well said. Folks have to take into consideration how superstitious people were at that time. And how much they believed in the power of god and the Devil. one failed harvest and many would starve the next winter. As well as Indian raids and French raids. Also the Slave woman Titiaba said she was a witch but in her culture that wasn't a bad thing. No wonder panic and madness consumed so many in fear.

@ryankean22 ...about not trying to force people into an all-or-nothing view. That's a cultural problem in America today. Look at politics. Each side blames and villifies the other. It doesn't work. You cannot project all evil on to any particular group. Neither can any group honestly claim perfect blamelessness for itself. And if you fail to examine the complexities of a historical situation, you never learn the real lesson. Simplifications (ie, Puritans were all evil) cheat us of real learning.
