Looks like we should have shown this to you earlier ... . NAV (nano air vehicle) from Aerovironment, funded by DARPA flies like a hummingbird ... so far, for about 20 seconds at a time. Technology development craft. http://www.avweb.com/blogs/insider/YourTaxDollarsAtWork_200677-1.html
how is it balanced in place?

@brennant74 Spying on senators that don't play ball or that side with protestors for freedom of speech or protecting your god-given right to be SAFE from unresonable search and seizure- in other words to make a worldwide holocaust a little bit easier.

Indeed, short range recon would make it worth it's weight in gold. Finding a weak link in a battlefield situation. In urban warfare, checking out the next room or floor. Finding the location of sniper. Neat stuff!

@Brennan74
Well, a few uses come to mind:
a) Almost undetectable short-range reconnaissance
b) Low altitude laser communications relay (interference-free battlefield commlink)
c) Minesweeping
d) Bringing coffee to the commanding office... :D

It is, and to achieve that it remains static in the air is not an easy task and less simulating a hummingbird's movement, but these DARPA scientists have done it again. However, I still don´t know what use can it have.
