SydneyRover is correct. The train was that length because it was the return journey of two trains. One had been stranded in Darwin after a track washout below Tennant Creek. The stranded train was connected to the next southbound Ghan and pulled back as one. Total length 1.2kms long

The longest Ghan to my knowledge comprised 45 cars hauled by 2 NR class locomotives. Total length was 1.2km and in excess of 2100 tonnes.
