HH Kyabje Zong Rinpoche Dorje Chang's advice on Dorje Shugden - Part 1

This initiation of Dorje Shugden was conferred in Los Angeles in the 1980s onto Geshe Tsultim Gyeltsen's own students in Thubten Dhargye Ling. Prior to Kyabje Zong Rinpoche giving the advice, Geshe-la formally requested Kyabje Zong Rinpoche to give an initiation of Dorje Shugden. Geshe Tsultim Gyeltsen was a very strong and devoted practitioner of Dorje Shugden and you can hear Geshe Tsultim Gyeltsen's voice at the beginning of the video.

After the formal request was made, Kyabje Zong Rinpoche himself, who is the overlord of all tantric mandalas, gave the profound initiation of Dorje Shugden to Geshe-la and all his disciples. And thereafter, Geshe-la and all his students practiced Dorje Shugden very strongly and very devotedly until the ban.

We have no reports of what happened after that.

. It is not that old of a practice. It was just what he was exposed to as a youth but discarded publically as a message to his current students to do the same.

If not, he would have stood against HHDL and had his center do the same and continue with the practice. It seems ignorant to practice something that is considered harmful by someone with more knowledge than us.

His school and monastery, Gaden Shartse, eventually dropped the practice on advice of HHDL. The Buddhist Centers that he created in Los Angeles, and, latter, in Long Beach have also dropped this practice.

Later in his life, Geshe Gyeltsen choose to stay connected to Gaden Shartse and had his center follow after that. His cementation was at Gaden Shartse. That should say something of his opinion towards the practice.

Through research, there are elements of it that can set up a negative mindset in its followers. That is was why it was banned by HHDL.

I read that our teacher, Geshe Gyletsen, was initiated into it by Pabonka when he was very young. It was part of his history and practice. Over the years, Geshe-la had hosted His Holiness the Dalia Lama many times to Los Angeles and opened up Buddhism for many in the West.

The whole issue of Dorje Shugden seems to have to do with loyalty to one’s teacher and protector.

This video was before the ban by HHDL. The practice of Dorje Shugden did not become popular with the Gelupa School of Tibetan Buddhism until Pabonka in the early 1900s. Even the reincarnation of the person giving the initiation, Kyabe Zong Rinpoche, is currently attached to Gaden Shartse where the practice was discontinued.
