This video, 'Installation Anniversary' commemorates the 5th anniversary of the installation of Cardinal Donald Wuerl as the sixth Archbishop of Washington on June 22, 2006, during a Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. More than 3,000 people filled the largest Catholic church in the Western Hemisphere to welcome the new archbishop, appointed to Washington by Pope Benedict XVI after leading the Diocese of Pittsburgh for 18 years. In attendance were family and friends, government officials, ambassadors from nearly two dozen countries and guests representing the interfaith community, parishes, religious orders and Catholic and community organizations within the archdiocese. Nine cardinals, more than 70 bishops and more than 350 priests and deacons processed to the altar to witness the Rite of Canonical Possession, which included the reading of the mandate by the Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Pietro Sambi. It was a day of great joy and thanksgiving for the archdiocese.
