I spent alot of time in Second Life a couple of years ago. Althought Second Life contains a wide range of aspects of "cyberspace", the one fact that its all owned by a single company and isn't an open internet standard really spoils it, in my opinion.
Right after this post I found some information about Opensim, which is an exciting development that I would be willing to accept as heading in the direction of true "cyberspace".
neuromancer has a unique (and very appealing) way with words when it comes to expressing cyberspace and our techno-future. i have learned to appreciate his advice on writing and his sincere output in the interviews on youtube, but i have to admit with less articulate and (intelilgent_ commentesr that neuromancer wasn't all it was cracked up to be. maybe im a generation too young, or maybe im missing something, but thats how i feel.
I'm 29. I find it very valuable. It's important to understand what has happened and why. Sometimes, when I talk to younger people I notice that they have no interest in understanding how we all got to think what we do. There's so much to understand about what has already happened. Such fiction has really shaped the future imo.
He wrote the short story Johnny Mnemonic, and unfortunately put his name on the screenplay. But seriously, you should read the short story before you criticize Gibson.
