  • dude! instead of making a video you should be watching the one that comes with the sharpmaker. you are using a great product incorrectly and doing a disservice to spyderco in so doing. watch the CD that came with your sharpmaker. when you're done watching it, watch it again. rinse and repeat!

  • @sweetdaddyroses please elaborate

  • Does anyone else think s30v is easier to sharpen than vg10? or is it just me?

  • @timesplitingking i havent done to much vg10 sharpening. I think s30v is easy enough. way easier than d2.

  • Does s30v require the diamond rods and how well does it work on 1095? Thanks!

  • @EnduringEagle Its doesn't require diamond rods, but they did expedite the sharpening of my 940. I haven't sharpened any 1095 yet, but I'm guessing that its much easier than s30v.

  • I'm no expert BUT it looks like you've got some problems with your method. First, you need to be bringing the knife blade straight down keeping it perpendicular to the base so that you maintain the proper angle. This is easier to do standing up over the knife so you can watch the spine.

Go slow and concentrate on keeping the angle.

Also, S30V is hard steel and you are likely re-profiling the blade because the factory grind is different. This will take a long time on the SM ceramics.

  • your problem may be that your using a 10 degree angle on one side a 40 degree on the other side.

  • ithink s 30 v is not as bad as 154 cm to get sharp

  • i hate sharpening my ka-bar who have the D2 steel.

  • as you can see, my response is not in the correct order. i had to post it in stages. but i hope you can get the gist of what i was saying.

    cheers, mate!

    *sdr*

  • i'll repeat what i said in my initial post. WATCH THE CD THAT CAME WITH YOUR SHARPMAKER! sal explains the process much better than i can.

oh, and as someone else already mentioned. benchmade's factory angles are different than spyderco's so you may need to put a little extra effort into getting that razor sharp edge. it will come. have fun and happy sharpening!

  • sharpening a blade requires consistency. make slow deliberate stokes, holding the knife steady and, again, straight up and down. the beauty of the sharpmaker is that the rods, when placed in the base, are set at certain angles that, in most cases, will allow you to get a hair popping edge if you just hold the knife properly and maintain the above mentioned steady stroke. the rods will do the work.

    well, since you asked...

for openers - STAND UP! you can't maintain the control you need while you're sitting down. you need to watch your knife and hold it at the proper angle, which is, straight up and down.

next - since sharpening a knife is all about angles. square yourself up to the sharpmaker. in your video you are sitting with the sharpmaker cocked at some ridiculous angle to your body.
