    i was one of the lucky ones to be in a performance of MESSIAEN'S TURANGALILA SYMPHONY in Athens several years ago... YVONNE LORIOD was on ONDES MARTENOT... She was old and walked on the stage supported, but ...WHAT A PRESENCE !

    Yvonne Loriod playing the ondes? Surely it would have been her sister Jeanne, who was the famed exponent of the instrument. As I recall (possibly from Peter Hall and Nigel Simeone's biography of Messiaen), Yvonne did play the ondes - she taught a Japanese pianist well enough to play the Turangalila ondes part for the Japanese premiere - but not publicly. For that matter she was also a prolific composer, understandably now overshadowed in this regard by her husband!

    Tell that to the thousands of ornithologists who have considered Messiaen's birdsong notations so accurate that they're used by them for scientific research.

    With a few exceptions, I'm mostly not that fond of what I've heard by Messiaen (nor am I convinced by his attempts to translate birdsong into music or his attempts at portraying religious grace and faith), but man, does he look like he would have been a fun guy to know or have as a teacher! An eccentric in the best sense of the word.
