The last electric trains were run as specials to Warragul Victoria Australia on December 5th 1998. Warragul is situated on the Gippsland line which was electrified as far as Traralgon in the early 1950s and was the final destination for electric trains after cutbacks - after withdrawal of the Electric locomotives and general goods trains from the Victorian system. The extension of suburban trains from Dandenong, and terminating them at Warragul on their system devoid of the 25 English Electric locomotives designed for the line, would have been a situation surely impossible to envisage for the men who designed and constructed this then new system of transportation, as a big mover of coal from the Latrobe Valley, and of freight to it. A preserved Tait Melbourne suburban set, and preserved English Electric locomotive L1162 and train made History as the last trains powered with electricity at 1,500 volts DC through the overhead wires between Pakenham and Warragul. This video is of a scene near, and some scenes at Warragul, of L1162 and train and some of the shunting of this train around the Warragul railway and goods yards and railway station.
