The release of 5000 'kom loi's' (flying lanterns) is just part of this festival. The release is the culmination of a deeply moving experience. I had waited 10 months to see this festival. It is difficult to put a word to how it felt to be part of this evening of meditation and celebration, but 'joyous' comes close. It happens every year just before the full moon in November on the outskirts of Chiang Mai.
On the full moon it's the Loy Kratong Festival ... wow what a party!

  • what's the name of Thai song in this festival?

    It looks pretty good...

  • Sorry gregile I tried to get hold of the music to help make the video better but was unable to find any information due to the language difficulties. The music you hear is the actual sound that was going on, over dubbed and joined together to try to give the atmosphere of the night. It was a deeply moving experience and I am looking forward to this years festival. Chiang Mai is a wonderful place to live. I hope you can make it here for the next one, just before the full moon on November 2nd .

  • Wow. I would love to see this in person.

  • This festival will be set on every full moon day in November

Position is near Mae Jo University, 20 km. north from Chiangmai downtown.

Don't worry, civil aviation authority would clear the sky especially for this. All flight to/from CNX will be postponed.

And surprisingly, there's almost no fire accident from these lantern reported. Coz if you do it right, the fire will put out in the sky, no harm to land structure.

  • Jack You did an absolutely beautiful job on this. We look forward to shooting same with you this year. Pat (Wimolnan) just arrived Bangkok and Mike and I will join her there in two weeks and migrate to Chiang Mai shortly after.
