Here is some really rare 1930 Black Jazz played by Cliff Jackson and His Krazy Kats on a Van Dyke 78rpm record (Van Dyke was one of Grey Gulls many labels). This rather obscure black jazz band included Melvin Herbert & Henry Goodwin on Trumpet, "Noisy" Richardson on trombone, Rudy Powell, Earl evans-alto sax & clarinet, Horace Langhorn-tenor sax & clarinet, Cliff Jackson-Piano, Andy Jackson-banjo, Chester Campbell-Tuba, and Percy Johnson on Drums. "The Terror" was composed by Jackson & Somlev. The Victrola is a 1925 Victor Two Door Orthophonic Credenza.

  • It's great to hear my Uncle Cliff in his prime. I use to go see him perform at a small nightclub when I was a child.

  • @danawoolfolk How wonderful that this wonderful performance has actually reached and been heard by a descendant of the great Cliff Jackson. How late was he still performing ? When did he pass away? Thank you so much for watching and commenting on my video.

  • Wow! What a fantastic record! I had hear about these Cliff Jackson Grey Gulls, but had never heard one. It's even better than I expected. Thanks so much for sharing it.

  • Yes, fanstatic unusual rare black Jazz. These are very hard to find, and one of the few black jazz bands to record for Grey Gull. Glad you enjoyed it.

  • I used to have a Van Duke record called the railroad boomer and on the other side I left my girl in the mountains. It did play very nice but the record cracked. You record and phonograph sound very nice. What do you mean by grey gull?

    Thanks

  • Van Dyke was one of Grey gulls many labels over the years. You can find the Grey Gull history under Wikipedia, just google Grey Gull Records and you will see the Wikipedia link pop up. The Van Dyke label is mentioned about 2 or 3 paragraphs from the end of the history.

  • @dewey70 It seriously sounds like the Cantina band straight ripped this off.

  • I've probably commented on this video before, but... man, that is one hot Van Dyke!

  • When I first started looking for an acoustic phonograph and began researching different models, I spent a lot of time on YouTube looking at the various models in action. This video was one of the major points in selling me on the Credenza. And what a great song; I wish I could find a copy of that record for myself.

  • For a Grey Gull label the fidelity is excellent! Of course the Victor Orthophonic could make any record sound good!

  • Of course this is a fantastic record. Did you know there are THREE takes of "The Terror"? I have one take on Van Dyke, an alternate on a Cliff Jackson CD compilation, and your copy is different from both. Horace Langhorn's tenor sax solo is the giveaway.

I question the wisdom of playing one of these Grey Gull products, with their porous shellac and overmodulated signal, on any windup machine using steel needles, even one as nice as your Victor Credenza.

  • anybody got a copy for sale get in touch

  • This song reminds me of the tune played during the Cantina Band sequence in Star Wars 4.

  • He was still doing a regular nightly GIG at Jimmy Ryan's in Manhattan until he passed in 1970. He had just come home from playing that night and was found by his wife the late, great Maxine Sullivan in the kitchen where it appeared he had collapsed after fixing himself a snack. It's too bad there is no video of him playing. He made it look so effortless and easy......
