I don't see why this is shocking? It sounds just like any other type of cosmetic crap that women blast their faces with every day

Not shocking. Many things are radio-active and of no harm at all. Do you have any clay pottery? Radio-active. Garden soil? RA. The amount placed on this lady's face would be about 1 mrem. Chance of cancer increases with a yearly exposure of 3000 mrem per year over many years. Typical person totals out at about 360 mrem per year, so you won't get cancer from radiation unless accidentally exposed to 450,000 mrems all at once. Hope this helps with the shock.

Radiation is everywhere, honestly if if was just radioactive enough to be tracked by a Geiger Counter then it can't be too bad.

Not shocking to people that are educated. Alpha particles are only dangerous if you ingest them!

Marketing. Selling based upon fear or image. The commercial could be updated and sell products tomorrow and whenever a nuke plant goes critical then sales peak. Another example, They had this pimple crap called 'proactive' selling on cable tv to kids, Active ingredient, benzyoil peroxide. Walmart. $2.88 per giant tube. Image sales.

People were just more aware of radioactivity at this time due to the Cold War. In fact, I think the majority of education people get in the US has to do with which country it is at war with. Of course this information is often incorrect or filled with bias, but students remember more of what is affecting them at the very moment. So to improve the American education system, they need to go to war with mathematics and reading!
