@barrhavener She said it was SIMILAR because they have a "very dramatic stuff" - not necessarily the stories are the same. I think she meant the tragic nature of the story. One dies and so the other kills themselves - that part is very similar to Romeo and Juliet!

The butterfly lovers are NOT similar to Romeo and Juliet. The story plots are not the same at all. Romeo and Juliet were lovers from two opposing families, whereas the butterfly lovers were simply high school sweet hearts (in modern terms). R & J could not get married simply because their families were enemies, whereas the B.Lovers could not get married because her parents wanted another son-in-law.
Thus, they are not Chinese equivalence of Romeo and Juliet.
