Suburban Travesty - Pretty Filkers

Suburban Travesty is a parody of the filk group Urban Tapestry. Allison, Debbie and Jodi of Urban Tapestry were the Filk Waifs (toastmistresses) for FilKONtario 19 held April 3-5, 2009.

Since attending my first FilKONtario in 2006, Debbie has been after me to write a filk song and perform it in a one-shot. Each year she would ask me, tongue-in-cheek, if my song was ready and if she should sign me up for a one-shot. Be careful what you wish for, lest it come true!

Inspired by a comment made by Jeff Bohnhoff after he, Maya and Vixy surprised Debbie with a parody of Heart's Barracuda at OVFF last fall, I began earnestly thinking about songs that I could possibly parody Urban Tapestry with. While driving around one day, flipping radio stations, I heard Roy Orbison's Pretty Woman. Hmmm .... Pretty Woman ..... Pretty Filkers .....

Ok, got a song, but I don't play any instruments or sing (in public). How to perform this? Well it turns out Dave, Tom and Sue where also thinking that FKO would be a good time to surprise UT with something. They needed a something, I had a something. I needed singer-musicians, they are awesome singer-musicians.

So a week before FKO I'm at Tom and Sue's - Dave and Tom have figured out all the chording - we have our first run through of the song and plan our shtick. I believe Dave was the one who suggested that the three of us parody the girls while we performed the song. I had thought up the group name 'Suburban Travesty' a while back for another scheme, but it was a prefect fit for what Dave, Tom and I were going to do. Sue, our manager, organized things with the Con and found us the perfect wigs.

This song is of course primarily dedicated to Allison, Debbie and Jodi, whom we all love dearly.

But it is also dedicated to the 'victims' of the Ohinator - you know who you are - we know and have shared in the suffering - take heart - the time of reckoning is coming!!
