  • Yes, it can be done that way. Sometimes, though, the math can be simpler using the square. Say, for example, the tape case is 2 1/2 inches and the measurement reads 19 3/8 inches. Not terribly difficult to calculate, but using the square you can measure to 10 and simply add 10 to the reading on the tape. Like so many things in home improvement, there are many ways to get the same result. Thanks for the comment.

  • it is always written on the tape what the actual tape measure, measures. So you just lie it flat from corner to corner and add on the size of the measuring tape, no need for framing squares.

  • Not a bad approach, but I would just purchase a set of "Trim-Stix". No need to numerically measure anything!

  • I've been a carpenter for 30 years and I still learn neat stuff; THANKS MAN!

  • Excellent! that is so helpful. Man I like to get good tips like this. I am doing a lot of re-model right now and have wrestled with this type of measurements. I normally cut a bit longer and then cut again because I doubt the measurements. This will get me to one cut again.

  • Thanks...Thats cool and should help alot...XD

  • Wow! I never thought of that before!

  • Or you can use a piece of 2x4 to w/e measurement you want for a longer corner.
