(Apologies for quality, shot way back when with ye olde 3.2 mpix camera)
Here's one Bike Friday customer who lives her line. A two part amble around her 12-acre property in a remote corner of the Big Island of Hawaii where she lives almost entirely off the land. 87 different fruits and veges dripping off the trees and vines can't be a bad thing! From my Dec 2005 visit. See part 2 here:

  • She hasn't had to buy 99% of her food or other stuff in three years.

  • not only is Ann, doing wonderful work on her own farm, she is loved in the community and is very generous with her time and knowledge.

  • For an ex-bearingpointer (I'm assuming from the cap) she's doing very well :)

    Good on her!

  • 99% self sustainable? What does this mean. The bicycle took how much energy? How did she get to the mainland to ride her bike. Nine acres for one or two people? How does that scale? Not to say she isn't doing better than most of us. But 99% self-sustainable? On what basis.

  • very cool, thanks for sharing :)
