It follows from all of this that using your laptop is even more dangerous, since there's no SSL to disable. Am I right or am I misunderstanding this?

What if you use webmail (gmail) in Opera Mobile via. SSL, and gmail also communicates with their mail, server via SSL?
Or can't you just get some tool, to secure the phone?
