This is another song I have been reminded of when checking out my Spinners' LPs. It is a 'Geordie' song written in the 1800s by Geordie Ridley (somewhat appropriately named) and he includes himself in the fifth verse. It is regarded by many as the unofficial anthem of Tyneside and is frequently sung by supporters of Newcastle United Football Club and Newcastle Falcons rugby club. Blaydon is a small town in Gateshead, situated about 4 mi (6.4 km) from Newcastle upon Tyne, in North East England. The actual race itself used to take place on the Stella Haugh 1 mi (1.6 km) west of Blaydon. Stella South Power Station was built on the site of the track in the early 1950s, after the races had stopped taking place in 1916. This and more information can be found on Wikipedia.
Please forgive my poor attempt to produce a Geordie accent. I had a friend from Chester-le-Street at college, but have not been in the company of any Geordies since.
Watching this video was the first thing I did after we secured the Championship title!
This time last year, it was:
Oh me lads, you should've seen them crying
Heads in hands in the stands, Premier dreams a-dying
All the lads and lasses there, they all had gloomy faces
Gannin doon to the Championship, without their former aces
But your wonderful rendition just reminds me even more that we're back where we belong!
