I'm just learning welding and taking a college class now. Gas welding without pops is my current challenge. You make it look so easy and it's not.

I know from experience that it can be very frustrating. Just relax and in time it will all come together. Personally, I think welding and brazing is intuitive. There is just a split second when the metal has reached the proper temperature and the filler rod is melting. Then it becomes a matter of feeling rather than knowing.

A welding instructor would not agree with this approach.

    Nice video and helpful description.

A polite suggestion to help improve your videos would be to film the actual welding through the same sort of lens as you have in your gas welding goggles, this would enable viewers to see the finer details of the welding process, like how the molten pool forms, how and when to add filler rod, and the subtle colour changes that let you know when you're close to blowing a hole in thing sheet metal.

You're right! Getting a filter is on my long list of things to do. Thanks for the suggestion.

Probably the only way to accurately judge a weld and the surrounding area is through x-ray.

I have heard many times that a good weld is stronger than the metal itself. But I have also heard that if the original metal breaks before the weld does, that means you overheated the metal during the weld and weakened it and is therefore not a perfect welding job. I would love to see comments on this topic.
