Could a person just use a 3' steel rod like you buy at a hardware store? And if not why? Thanks.

its all about controlling the puddle if im not mistaken. good video very simply put for common folk to understand

@bosscolon it would be more costly to do it that way because of consumables but be equally strong. because you are heating the metal to molten either way you weld it. gas welding would look really nice on a really nice metal sculpture. good idea

would you recommend using gas welding for ornamental furniture building,,i use a basic mig welder right now no gas ,,but looks like the gas welder has alot smoother finish and not as much grinding involved,,but my concern is the strength of it ,is it a strong weld with gas? the parts i use to build my furniture is 1" -square tubing hammered on all four edges,,and is 3/16th to 1/8th of an inch wall thickness,, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks
this tipe of weld is it strong?

A good gas weld is stronger than the metal to be welded. Key point: A good gas weld, not a mediocre weld, not an average weld - but a good gas weld.

Yes you could use that. You can also use a steel coat hanger.
The mild steel RG 45 gas welding rod from a welding supply is a easier to work with.
Best idea is to practice and see what kind of results you get. After some practice you be able to figure out what works best for you.

NIce job, I tried gas welding for the first time the other day, I like it a lot. Slower than mig and arc but kind of soothing...

I agree, it is a whole different kind of welding. I look for excuses to gas weld rather than picking up the mig gun and running a bead.
