Fuck! Windows 7 seems to install some random driver when I plug in my board. It won't let me install any other drivers. It tells me the latest driver is already installed...

You are a lifesaver, was having a mare following Arduino instructions and yor vid has sorted it! Cheers

So what do you do when you delete the unknown device, unplug Arduino, plug it in again, and it shows up as unknown device, again?

@hobbytronics101 just a joke =)
Sounds like you may have a faulty device, cable or some problem with your Windows 7 installation.

I just got my arduino uno and i am following the instructions but when i plug the arduino in my computer does nothing, the arduino lights up like it should but my laptop doesn't start installing the drivers, i go to the device manager and there is nothing there under com and ports i tried all 4 of my usb ports and same thing happens as if my laptop doesn't read it at all just gives it power. I'm on windows 7 professional 32 bit

It wont be listed under the Ports in Device Manager unless you have successfully installed the drivers. Do you have an "Unknown Device" in the device manager? If so, delete the device from device manager and plug your UNO back in. Windows should recognise the device and go from there. If none of your computers even recognise the device, then it may be faulty, but first try using a different cable, because there are usb cables that are designed just for charging. Use a known woirking cable
