I must apologise for my savage criticism, I am clearly a frustrated photoshop novice and your light ray demonstration is by far the most realistic and intelligent way of creating this type of light on you tube. I have looked at others that use the lassoo tool as you mentioned, but their methods falls far short of yours. I am sorry if my criticism seemed savage, you certainly don't deserve that! Perhaps I let my frustration get the better of me. I can only apologise. Kind regards Andy

From your description it seems to me that you are dealing with an inverted selection. That means you selected all but the ray you want to create. You might need to inverse your selection before applying the level layer.
In order to see the selected ray in the mask mode as I do you need to open the mask mode options and check on selected areas. You open this options by double click on the mask mode button.

The problem is you are speaking in English and all the commands are in your own language. This is ok for advanced users of photoshop, but not for beginners, which is frustrating because your light effects are more realistic, but useless for anyone who can't read your language. Also, you say you need to adjust your selection etc., but how? Not everyone is as proficient as you on photoshop. The people that need help are obviously the people who are just learning. Sorry for sounding so negative.

Thank you very much for your savage criticism. I found it very helpful to hear your points, some of which I'm going to improve in my next video. As to your question I adjusted the selection with a tool called "refine edge"
A button is activated once you chose the selection tool.
