Some basic banjo strums and picking, but without picks. You Are My Sunshine is the song.

  • Nice. I especially like it because you didn't use picks. I always like to notice when someone gets a lot of sound out of their instrument without looking as if they are working at it. Some people get impressed when you look like you're working up a sweat playing a tune, although i'm rather the opposite.

  • @zarglink I agree. I'm amazed at how the very best players ,ake difficult stuff look like it just happens. I stay with pretty simple riffs and runs, because they at least appear to just happen. At least when I am lucky. Thanks for the comment.

  • If you use an open tuning on guitar it's not called a standard tuning for guitar, so why should an open G be called a standard tuning? C tuning is standard for a banjo and open G means standard for the G tuning. Of course there are many tunings for the 5 string banjo.

  • @Robin18us Yes, an interesting point. I asked Google search for standard banjo tuning, and the first entry was C tuning, based on Pete Seeger's book, where he teaches it first. The second entry was G tuning as standard, based on the bluegrass approach that, along with frailing, seems to be most popular for learners at the moment. Maybe C for folk-style and G for country and bluegrass? A double standard! Thanks for the comment.

  • in my old banjo music books the 4th string is tuned to c ; but i like it tuned to g much better. thanks!

  • @ropermrmeredith06 You're welcome. There are songs that call for a C tuning. And there are quite a few alternate tunings that lend themselves to other songs. Often, though, the G tuning is referred to as the standard tuning.

  • Great video! I like the way you finger play. It gives it a nice mellow tone. (as banjos go)

The song sounded good. A little bit of a mountain folk jazz sort of sound.

  • the banjo is the coolest sounding of the string instruments i think :) u play it so well

  • I remember when this vid debued back in 08 i loved it then loven it now

far more upbeat then other renditions I've heard

  • TheFolksinger Yes I'd agree with that. C was always the normal standard tuning for a 5string. Bluegrass likes open G, D and others as well as C, but old time music has tons of tunings...:o)

  • @PureZOOKS Thanks again.

  • @TheFolksinger You yhave earned every nice comment you have recieved.
