Steam cars of this type are not cheaper but can be made to use any liquid fuel. Most use kerosene or gasoline. Check out Jay Leno's garage for the Doble steam car. No pollution control device and meets current CA standards!
Stanleys were slow to get up steam. Doble steamers could get going in as little as 1 minute from a cold start.

@mrspivvy - they could raise steam on any flammable liquid & kerosene was the best - the Dobles of the 1920s & 30s had a flash-type boiler which could raise 900lbs of steam in 35 secs
