Two things: 1, "Gypsy" is a term born from the mistaken belief that they came from Egypt. The people it is used to refer to are called the Roma, and they originally came from India. 2, the tribal people in Ireland that are commonly called Gypsies (or Travellers) are not in any way related to the Roma, and in fact consider the term a grave insult. The proper name for them is the Pavee.

@KiteSwift No no no no. Irish "Gypsies" are not related AT ALL to the type of gypsies you're thinking of. The Roma people (commonly called Gypsies because they were believed to come from Egypt) originated in India and migrated westward through Europe. The so-called "Irish Gypsies" (also called Travellers) are ethnically no different from other Irish people, but are just a different cultural group.
