An overview of Operation Plowshare, which occured in 1962. Operation Plowshare's main objective was to test and excavate the earth with nuclear explosives. The results? Over 12 million tonnes of earth were displaced by the blast, creating a crater 97.5 meters (320 feet) deep and 390.1 meters (1,280 feet) wide. PLUS: incredible SLOW-MOTIONS of the HUGE explosions! AWESOME!!!

  • I didn't see the main (if not only) explosion to take place during the program (of the nuclear variation). I'm speaking of Storax Sedan, a 104 kiloton blast that left a huge ass crater.

  • well, this was an explanation film.

  • Oh yeah, forgot, sorry. I just get up in nuclear topics (huge fan, big researcher, love nuclear devices!) The Cold War arms race is one of my favorite times in history (from the perspective of interesting and dramatic...wouldn't have wanted to live in the era though, lol). I've always wanted to experience a nuclear test in person though, so that way I can get a true, first person view of the size and feeling.

  • lol be glad that you weren't living in the Cold War, because the Soviets had just about froze everyone dead with their big nukes.

  • love the slow motions! Plowshare was a crazy project, eh?

  • Oh yeah. Any project that has to do with explosions is a crazy project!

  • @Halogen360 Yeah, Sedan crater is pretty big. I will put it into perpective. With a running start, I was not able to throw a rock from the top of the crater to the center. I think the rock made it somewhere half way down.

In a separate statement you glorify these projects. I will tell you that the results are sad. This area (Frenchman Flats and NTS) is a beautiful area that sadly has been destroyed.

  • i love the comentators back in the day, i feel like im watching dodge ball lol

  • the towers were nuked

  • yarr, lets blast meself a new pond with a 5kiloton nuke.

  • You should read "The Firecracker Boys" by Dan O'Neill. It's about how Eskimos averted a

nuclear blast about 10 miles from their village. It's an excellent account.

I camped at the test site one winter night in the '80s, before they cleaned it up. Stayed in the transmitter shack. I didn't know what it was at the time...I recognized it later from pictures in a report.
