  • Why can't we have more informative less flashy broadcasts such as these? With proper music playing over the titles after all the BBC has a decent orchestra and the only program the seem to have used them in is gardeners world. We also need presenters of martyn leiws' and miohael buerk' calibre

  • Complete with the great MArtyn Lewis.

  • @SgtPeppersRevolver The announcer into the SIX is Brian Baines and the announcer into the ONE is David Miles

  • The weather-forecasts seemed to be more accurate when Ian McGaskill stuck those clouds on the map than they are now.

  • Another thought about why the new music is the way it is- trying to keep up with modern styles, or a stab at multiculturalism in moving away from traditional white European sort of stuff?

  • And would be interesting if someone made a mock of such for once...

  • I agree- get rid of the beeps. They belong only on the radio where they actually mean something.

  • Hmmm... I suppose part of it is to try and promoted your product over your competitors- standard practice really. Not that there was much competition- ITV and Channel 4, which in those days was an extention of ITV anyway. Cable and satellite were in their infancy if at all.

  • Yup. As you know, exploder76 and Mr. Baldwin, Lawley was previously a Nationwide Presenter. Mr. Lewis was from I.T.N., but was transferred to the BBC and remained there from 1986 to May 1999. Lawley, I love you! Diana M. May 4, 2009

  • I can't agree with you more - and I'm in my late teens! In my opinion, when comparing the main news programmes from ITN and the BBC, the News at Ten on ITV has the better theme - simply because it doesn't follow the trend of 'modern' new music. The current BBC News music is getting kind of tiresome; I'd like to see them try re-arranging these classic themes the next time they rebrand the bulletins, instead of 'beefing' up the beeps once more.

  • The BBC Six o'clock news was started on Sept. 3, 1984, taking place of "Sixty Minutes". The BBC One o'clock News was started on Oct. 27, 1986 replacing BBC News Afternoon.
